In our last blog post, we discussed the measures we take to improve our emotional and physical wellbeing by enhancing our setup.
Whether this involves evaluating our equipment or finding accommodation that provides separation of space, it’s crucial to prioritize a good setup so we can work effectively.
However, we needed to consider more than just productivity and optimization when embarking on the journey of becoming digital nomads. Balance is necessary in any profession. As remote workers, we must think about effective time management to ensure we achieve a work-life balance that promotes healthy boundaries.
I often find myself trapped in the mindset that I need to stay glued to my laptop at all times to be productive. Sometimes, it can seem like I’m not making progress if I’m not constantly working. But progress isn’t linear. Pushing myself beyond what is necessary can lead to burnout, fatigue, and ultimately, poor time management and unproductivity.
Therefore, setting work hours is beneficial for my wellbeing ensure I build rest into my day. Working a typical 9-5 on my workdays allows me to set boundaries for myself. I know I’ll complete important tasks by a certain time, leaving the rest of the evening for myself. Whether that means exploring or resting, I know I’ve done enough for the day and deserve that time.
Moreover, as digital nomads, we also need to prioritize travel in our days. After all, this lifestyle is about working remotely to experience new things, cultures, and people. Working non-stop isn’t conducive to this life. Integrating set working times and specific tasks into our travel routine helps me maintain a good work/life balance. It also allows me to take time away from my laptop without feeling guilty for not grinding continuously.
Time management techniques are also necessary to determine when you can be most productive. For instance, when we move from place to place, establishing new routines takes time. Giving myself grace to allow a day to settle, find my workspace, and ultimately find my flow, is beneficial to my wellbeing.
When we move to a new location, I often feel frustrated because I’m unproductive on the first day. But this is because I’m adjusting to a new environment. My previous routines have been disrupted, and I need to be kind to myself to re-establish a good workflow. Instead of berating myself for not being productive, I allow time to get used to my surroundings and trust that I’ll accomplish my specific tasks the following day.
To combat this, building in time to account for unproductive days helps me manage my stress. Utilizing time management tools, such as Planyway, helps me visualize my week. I can integrate work tasks, personal tasks, and my calendar to get an overview of what needs to be done. If I know I have a travel day, I can work around it by shifting priorities, as I have a clear view of my workload and how I can adapt it to suit my needs. This time management strategy helps me achieve the balance I need, pushing the needle forward without compromising my wellbeing.
In summary, good time management is essential for digital nomads. Although productivity is important, integrating a system where we manage our time effectively allows us to step away from our laptops and be kind to ourselves. This way, we can spend our time doing what we truly love: exploring!
